- The Sub Male Lead is Burning with Jealousy

Description
“My feelings will never change, Angelica. I’ll bless both of you, so you can find happiness forever.” A confession from a secondary male lead that wasn’t in the original novel. Rahil, who became emperor, vowed eternal love to the original female lead just before she went to the altar. Now as the emperor, he needed to have an empress. But he wanted someone who wouldn’t torment his beloved Angelica. The perfect person for that role was Anais Ruol. A woman who, despite her vow of eternity, dared to look down on the emperor with contempt. Indifferent to his love and clever enough not to hurt Angelica. A woman cold to love, cynical about it. “There’s no one else but you. Someone who can stay by my side without wavering, who can play the role of a wise empress…” “Let’s draft a contract. But before that… allow me just one slap.” For Angelica, for the nation, his feelings towards Anais leaned more towards denial. Yet, strangely, every time he was with her, Rahil felt an unfamiliar and unbelievable flutter in his heart. “You can’t… can’t kiss me!” “Why?” “Because my first kiss will be with another man!” On their wedding night, Rahil was both shocked and betrayed by Anais’s explosive statement. But at the same time, he became even more determined. “I’ll make sure you, Anais, will be the first to kiss me.”

The Sub Male Lead is Burning with Jealousy Review & Spoilers - Novel Translator
My Thoughts on The Sub Male Lead is Burning with Jealousy
I dove into The Sub Male Lead is Burning with Jealousy with high expectations, given the buzz around it. It's a completed original novel with adult themes, romance, and a healthy dose of drama, so I was prepared for a wild ride. After reading, I can definitely see why it has a dedicated fanbase, but also understand some of the criticisms.
First Impressions
The initial chapters hooked me with the premise. Anais, our MC, reincarnated and determined to avoid the original story's drama, finds herself unexpectedly entangled with Emperor Rahil, the sub-male lead. This setup is intriguing, and I was eager to see how she'd navigate this unwanted attention, especially since Rahil is initially hung up on the original female lead. The arranged marriage trope is a classic, but the story puts a unique spin on it.
What Works Well
The strongest aspect, in my opinion, is the character of Anais. She's not your typical damsel in distress. She's intelligent, independent, and doesn't immediately fall for the male lead's charms. I appreciated her initial resentment towards the forced marriage and her attempts to establish boundaries. Many readers also seemed to agree that the translation quality is top-notch, which significantly enhances the reading experience. The plot, while containing familiar elements, manages to feel relatively fresh. The author does a good job of subverting some of the common tropes.
Areas of Concern
While I enjoyed many aspects, I can see why some readers dropped the novel. Rahil's actions are definitely problematic at times. His initial obsession with the original female lead, coupled with his forceful behavior towards Anais, can be off-putting. Some readers felt that Anais forgives him too easily, lacking the self-respect they expected. The male lead forces her into marriage and proclaims his love for the original female lead in front of her. He even takes her first kiss. The justification for the intimate scenes also felt contrived to some.

Final Verdict
The Sub Male Lead is Burning with Jealousy is a mixed bag. It has a strong female lead, an interesting premise, and excellent translation quality. However, the problematic behavior of the male lead and the questionable consent in some scenes might be a deal-breaker for some readers. If you enjoy stories with morally grey characters and are willing to overlook some of the more problematic elements, you might find this novel enjoyable. Otherwise, proceed with caution. I'd give it a tentative 3 out of 5 stars.
