My Thoughts on The Side Character Is Retiring
"The Side Character Is Retiring" promised a fresh take on the transmigration trope, and while it had some interesting ideas, my experience was ultimately mixed. The premise, where the protagonist wakes up as a side character destined for a dismal fate, certainly grabbed my attention. However, the execution left me wanting more.
First Impressions
I was initially intrigued by the protagonist's decision to actively deviate from the original novel's plot. The idea of him saying "nope" to his pre-determined destiny and forging his own path had potential. The early chapters set up the conflict well, highlighting the protagonist's desire to avoid a "cucked" ending.
What Works Well
I appreciated the initial focus on the protagonist's internal struggle and his cautious approach to changing his fate. The concept of him leveraging his knowledge of the future to his advantage was also appealing. It gave him a sense of agency and allowed for some clever maneuvering in the early stages of the story.
Areas of Concern
Unfortunately, the novel started to lose its luster as I progressed. The plot felt increasingly generic, with predictable scenarios and cliché characters. The introduction of elements like dragons, ego swords, and gender-swapped elves, while potentially interesting, felt haphazard and lacked depth. I also found the protagonist's motivations becoming increasingly muddled as the story went on. His initial drive to avoid a bad ending seemed to devolve into a more general desire for power and comfort, which made him less relatable. The abruptness of certain plot developments and the lack of detailed explanations also detracted from my enjoyment. The magic system, in particular, felt underdeveloped and simplistic.

Final Verdict
Overall, "The Side Character Is Retiring" had some promising elements, but ultimately fell short of my expectations. While the premise was intriguing, the execution felt rushed and lacked the depth and nuance needed to truly stand out. The generic plot elements and underdeveloped characters made it difficult for me to fully invest in the story. I wanted to love it, but it ended up being just another mediocre read.
