My Thoughts on The Reverse Scales of Osa
"The Reverse Scales of Osa" was quite the experience! I went in expecting one thing and came out with something else entirely. It's a book that definitely leaves an impression, and I can see why it has such a dedicated following.
First Impressions
Initially, I was drawn in by the unique premise – a blend of historical fantasy, romance, and, well, let's just say very mature themes. The story dives right into the thick of things, introducing Nokhee, a young woman burdened with a heavy responsibility to her family, and Kijoon, the enigmatic servant. The world-building is intriguing, hinting at a rich tapestry of yokai and spirits. I was immediately curious to see where the author would take this.
What Works Well
The plot, despite the strong focus on adult content, is surprisingly well-developed. The author does a great job of weaving together the various threads of the story, revealing secrets and motivations through multiple points of view. I particularly appreciated getting glimpses into the male lead's perspective, which added depth to his character and explained his... intense obsession with the female lead.
Many readers will appreciate the smut, and its integration into the plot. The story is filled with tragedy, and the ending is bittersweet with a hint of family life. I also found the translator did a great job with the source material.
Areas of Concern
While I enjoyed the overall story, I can see why some readers might be hesitant. There are definitely some non-consensual or dubiously consensual scenes that might make some uncomfortable. The male lead's possessiveness can also come across as problematic at times. Also, the female lead's repeated use of the word "servant" for the male lead felt jarring.

Final Verdict
Overall, "The Reverse Scales of Osa" is a unique and memorable read. If you're looking for a story with a strong plot, complex characters, and are comfortable with mature themes, then I'd recommend giving it a try. Just be aware of the content warnings and go in with an open mind. I found it to be a rollercoaster of emotions, and while it might not be for everyone, it's definitely a story that will stick with me for a while.
