"The Crazy Killer Whale's Favourite Penguin" is a novel I dove into with a mix of curiosity and amusement, and it definitely delivered a unique reading experience. With its blend of comedy, drama, fantasy, and romance, it's a story that aims to charm, and for the most part, it succeeds.
First Impressions
The premise alone is enough to pique anyone's interest: a woman from South Korea reincarnated as a penguin, adopted by a tower lord, and pursued by a "crazy" killer whale. It's wonderfully absurd, and the initial chapters do a great job of setting up this quirky world and its even quirkier characters. I was immediately drawn in by Adelia, the penguin protagonist, and her unusual circumstances.
What Works Well
What stood out most to me was the refreshing personality of the female lead, Adelia. She's honest, straightforward, and has a delightfully unique perspective on the world, shaped by her past life and her current penguin-ness. Her interactions with Suradel, the killer whale (who is, in fact, an ancient dragon!), are full of playful banter and genuine affection. The romance is a slow burn, but it feels natural and rewarding. I also appreciated the well-developed supporting cast, each with their own distinct personalities and quirks. The world-building, particularly the lore surrounding demi-beasts and the secret of the world, added a layer of depth and intrigue to the story.
Areas of Concern
While I thoroughly enjoyed the majority of the novel, I did find the final arc to be somewhat rushed and less satisfying than what came before. The introduction of a "villain" so late in the story felt a bit forced, and the resolution of the conflict felt abrupt. I would have preferred the author to focus on further developing the relationships between the characters and exploring the world in more detail.
