My Thoughts on The Arranged Suitor Was the Kidnapper
"The Arranged Suitor Was the Kidnapper" is a novel that definitely sparked some strong opinions, and after diving in, I can see why. It's a blend of comedy, fantasy, and romance with a hefty dose of josei, creating a unique but potentially divisive experience.
First Impressions
The premise is intriguing: an arranged marriage between a seemingly cold duke and a woman who may or may not be the beastkin he's been searching for. I was immediately drawn in by the potential for slow-burn romance and the beastkin element, which promised some fun character dynamics. However, as I progressed, I began to see some of the issues others mentioned.
What Works Well
The fluffy moments are definitely a highlight. When the relationship works, it works. I especially enjoyed the doting and protective family dynamic of the female lead, it's always refreshing to see a wholesome family supporting each other. The beastkin characteristics, with their animal traits popping out during moments of high emotion, added a layer of charm and occasional humor. The "Cold Duke of the North" trope is also well-executed, giving the male lead an air of mystery and intrigue. The novel is adapted into a manhwa, so the visual elements are likely stunning.
Areas of Concern
One of my biggest issues was the reliance on miscommunication. While some tension is expected in a contractual relationship, the misunderstandings felt prolonged and, at times, frustrating. I found myself wishing the characters would just have an honest conversation! I can see how some might find the female lead frustratingly clueless, as her reluctance to be upfront with the male lead drags on. Also, the plot relies on common clichés, and the male lead can come off as overly emo.

Final Verdict
"The Arranged Suitor Was the Kidnapper" is a novel with a lot of potential, but it's not without its flaws. If you enjoy slow-burn romances with beastkin elements and don't mind some frustrating miscommunication, you might find this story charming. However, if you prefer straightforward plots and dislike clueless protagonists, this might not be the book for you. Overall, I'd say it's a decent read with some enjoyable elements, but be prepared for a potentially bumpy ride.
