The premise alone – a gamer transmigrating into a flop idol character in an otome game – is enough to grab your attention, and the story mostly delivers on its promise of lighthearted entertainment.
First Impressions
From the get-go, the story plunges you into Park Ha's chaotic new reality. He's no longer just a gamer; he is a character in the game, and not a particularly successful one at that! I immediately wanted to know if he would manage to turn his fate around, or if he was doomed to remain a flop forever. The early chapters are filled with humor as Park Ha navigates the cutthroat world of idols, armed with his meta-knowledge of the game.
What Works Well
One of the strongest aspects of this novel is its cast of characters, especially the male leads. The relationships feel surprisingly genuine and develop at a reasonable pace. I appreciated that the author took the time to build tension and ensure consent was a key element in the romantic interactions. The interactions between Park Ha and the main male lead were especially well done and really made me root for them. I also found the portrayal of the entertainment industry, and especially the netizens' reactions, to be surprisingly accurate and entertaining, if a little chaotic at times.
Areas of Concern
While I overall enjoyed the story, there were a couple of things that held it back from being a perfect read for me. I felt like the "idol" aspect of the story became less of a focus as it went on, shifting more towards the broader world of showbiz. This wasn't necessarily a bad thing, but it did feel a little like a bait and switch. Also, while Park Ha's quick adaptation to his new talents was convenient, it did feel a little unrealistic that he was instantly good at everything despite his initial lack of interest.
