My Thoughts on Stalking Diary
"Stalking Diary" is a college romance that dives into the complexities of first love, acceptance, and navigating relationships with differing personalities. Overall, I found it to be an enjoyable read, though it definitely had some frustrating moments.
First Impressions
The premise is intriguing: a shy art student, Jeong-ha, secretly crushing on the popular Kwon-oh, documenting his feelings through drawings. When Kwon-oh discovers the "stalking diary," the story takes off in unexpected directions. It’s a classic "he fell first, but he fell harder" scenario, which I always enjoy.
What Works Well
I appreciated the exploration of Jeong-ha's insecurities and his journey towards accepting his sexuality. The initial awkwardness and misunderstandings felt realistic, and I liked how the characters eventually worked through their issues, even if it took them a while. Many readers praised the ML, Kwon-oh, for being a "green flag." Despite some initial roughness, he quickly falls for Jeong-ha and becomes a devoted partner. Also, the author does a good job at portraying the challenges of first love. The smut scenes were well-done and plot-relevant.
Areas of Concern
One of my biggest frustrations was the characters' inability to communicate effectively. There were so many unnecessary conflicts that could have been resolved with a simple conversation. The misunderstandings felt drawn out and, at times, exhausting. I also noticed some readers felt that Kwon-oh infantilized Jeong-ha, which they found weird and off-putting. Some aspects of the intimate scenes, especially the focus on Jeong-ha's youthful appearance, felt heteronormative and uncomfortable. Also, I saw some criticism of the author's choice to include multiple chapters from the ML's POV in the middle of the story, which some found disruptive and unnecessary.
Final Verdict
Despite its flaws, "Stalking Diary" is a worthwhile read if you enjoy college romance, and don't mind some frustrating miscommunication. The characters are endearing, and the story explores important themes of self-acceptance and navigating relationships. I'd recommend it with the caveat that you might need to exercise some patience with the characters' communication skills.
