Description
Ye Mian had just survived his third year of high school. Before he could live his so called easy-going and free life in college, he was hit by a truck and transmigrated to the Da Wen dynasty — a dynasty that did not exist within history. Fortunately, his new identity was that of a young master from a powerful family. Surrounded by servants all day, he lived a life of luxury. But so what? He still had to attend school early in the morning. The earlier he had to wake up, the more displeasure he had. Thus, the young man began to rebel. His life motto went from “improving oneself” to “living in the moment”. Within the imperial academy, he formed a new gang and became the school tyrant. – This counts as school life during ancient times? My Thoughts on School Life During the Ancient Times
School Life During the Ancient Times promised a blend of genres I adore: historical, school life, and a touch of romance. After diving in, I found myself largely charmed by its lighthearted approach and the protagonist's infectious personality. It's a fun read, and I can see why it's garnered a dedicated following.
First Impressions
The initial chapters immediately pulled me in. The setup – a modern soul transmigrating into an ancient Chinese school setting – is a classic premise, but the author executes it with a refreshing lightness. I appreciated that the story didn't dwell excessively on the MC's adjustment period, instead opting to jump right into the school dynamics and character interactions. It definitely sets the stage for a cozy and engaging reading experience.
What Works Well
The protagonist, with his sunny disposition and knack for making friends, is undeniably the heart of this story. His ability to navigate complex social situations, stand up for his friends, and repair broken family bonds is truly heartwarming. The slice-of-life elements shine, painting a vivid picture of school life in ancient China, complete with its own set of challenges and triumphs. The author really succeeds in making the MC likeable and charming, even to the point where I could see why the male lead falls for him so easily.
Areas of Concern
While I enjoyed the romance aspect, I did find it a tad awkward at times. The characters, despite being underage teens, are often written as if they were young adults, which created a slight disconnect for me. The male lead's initial "bully" behavior towards the MC didn't entirely sit well with me, even though it's portrayed as a form of affection. I also felt that the ending could have been more conclusive, leaving some questions unanswered.

Final Verdict
Despite a few minor shortcomings, School Life During the Ancient Times is a delightful read that I would recommend, especially if you're a fan of slice-of-life stories with a historical setting and a touch of romance. The protagonist's charm, the heartwarming friendships, and the exploration of family dynamics make this a truly engaging novel. I'm definitely looking forward to the sequel, Working in Ancient Times, to see what adventures await the MC in the officialdom. I give this novel a solid 4 out of 5 stars.
