My Thoughts on Runaway Secretary
"Runaway Secretary" promised a steamy, dramatic read, and while it delivered on some fronts, it also left me with mixed feelings. This novel, with its adult themes, boss-subordinate relationship, and touch of pregnancy drama, certainly isn't for the faint of heart.
First Impressions
Initially, I was drawn in by the premise. A story about a woman running away from a toxic relationship with her boss? Sign me up! I was expecting a tale of empowerment and self-discovery. However, my enthusiasm waned as I delved deeper.
What Works Well
Despite some significant flaws, the novel does have its moments. I appreciated the character development that occurred later in the story. The female lead, initially portrayed as somewhat naive, eventually finds her voice and establishes boundaries. This growth was a welcome change, and it made me root for her in the end. There's a certain guilty pleasure in watching the characters navigate their messy relationship, even when it's frustrating. I also thought it was engaging enough to pass the time.
Areas of Concern
Unfortunately, there were aspects that detracted from my overall enjoyment. The early chapters were particularly difficult to get through due to the frustrating dynamic between the leads. The male lead's behavior often bordered on cruel, and the female lead's acceptance of it felt unrealistic at times. It was hard to see her constantly forgiving the male lead. The translation quality also proved to be a barrier. The disjointed prose made it difficult to fully immerse myself in the story.
