My Thoughts on Retirement is Not Allowed
"Retirement is Not Allowed" certainly grabbed my attention with its premise, blending adventure, fantasy, romance, and the supernatural. The idea of a genius protagonist navigating age regression and destiny in a European-esque setting is definitely appealing. However, after diving in, I have mixed feelings about how well the story delivers on its initial promise.
First Impressions
The early chapters are a bit of a slow burn. We're introduced to the protagonist as a child, and much of the initial narrative revolves around his interactions with the female lead, who is also quite young. While early romance can be charming, the pacing felt a little sluggish, and I was left wanting more substantial plot development. I kept waiting for the story to really take off.
What Works Well
The world-building is intriguing, even if it's unveiled gradually. The author clearly has a vision for the magical elements and the societal structures within the story. I appreciate the hints of a grander destiny at play, and the protagonist's inherent genius does offer moments of compelling problem-solving. The early romance, though slow-paced, has the potential to blossom into something meaningful as the characters mature.
Areas of Concern
My main reservation lies in the pacing and character consistency. There are moments where characters seem to act illogically, seemingly just to create artificial tension. This can be frustrating, especially when it detracts from the established intelligence or motivations of the characters. I also found myself wishing for more consistent progress in the overarching plot. While slice-of-life elements can be enjoyable, they need to be balanced with a sense of forward momentum. The story sometimes feels like it's meandering without a clear direction. The early chapters can feel tedious, with not much plot progression.

"Retirement is Not Allowed" has a solid foundation with its unique premise and intriguing world. However, the slow pacing and occasional character inconsistencies hold it back from reaching its full potential.
