My Thoughts on Reformist Secular Saintess
First Impressions
"Reformist Secular Saintess" threw me for a loop initially. The title suggests a strong focus on religious themes, but after diving in, I found it's more of a kingdom reformation story with a good dose of academy life thrown in for good measure. The premise is interesting: a reincarnated male protagonist finds himself as a 12-year-old princess. Her main goal? Avoiding marriage at all costs!
What Works Well
The initial hook is definitely there. The princess's convoluted plan to get out of marriage by intentionally annoying the corrupt church is intriguing, and the political maneuvering has the potential to be quite engaging. I found the writing style surprisingly polished, a welcome change from some of the rougher prose I've encountered in other web novels. The "cute protagonist" tag is accurate. The princess's internal struggles as she grapples with her past life and current predicament add a layer of depth to her character.
Areas of Concern
My main concern lies with the overall direction of the plot. The princess's plan to get sent to a convent seems a bit flimsy. There's a real question of whether it will actually work, or if she'll just end up in an even worse situation. I also struggled with the lack of clear progress or development in her abilities. As of the available chapters, she possesses above-average swordsmanship for her age, but lacks magic or any special holy powers, which makes her actions feel somewhat limited in scope. I also felt uneasy with the fact that she's 12 years old and there are late teens trying to get too friendly with her.
Final Verdict
"Reformist Secular Saintess" has potential, but needs a clearer sense of direction. The writing is solid, and the premise is interesting enough to keep me reading for now. However, I hope the author addresses the concerns about the plot's coherence and the protagonist's development. I'm giving it a cautious recommendation, with the caveat that it may not be for everyone.
