Description
Hai San’er x Lu Xie Pure Mermaid Top x Hot-Tempered, Rough-Handed Bottom Lu Xie, injured on a mission, hides out in a small seaside shop to recover. One day, while working at the shop, a wavy silver-haired handsome man walks in. Hai San’er: “I’m pregnant.” Lu Xie (rolling his eyes): “You’re crazy. You’re a guy—how can you be pregnant?” Hai San’er: “I’m a mermaid.” Lu Xie (slightly patient, but not much): “Even if you’re a mermaid, you’re still a male fish.” Hai San’er: “Male fish can get pregnant too.” Lu Xie (fuming): “You’re the one who f*cking made me pregnant!” There’s a baby—it’s a little pearl, and it will eventually turn into a little mermaid. The top (Hai San’er) is the biological parent.

My Thoughts on Raising A Mermaid
"Raising A Mermaid" is a completed original web novel that dives into the fantasy, comedy, and romance genres with a shounen ai twist. The premise alone, with a mpreg element and a human-nonhuman relationship, intrigued me. After reading it, I have mixed feelings, landing somewhere between charmed and slightly frustrated.
First Impressions
The initial chapters are definitely a make-or-break point for many, including myself. The male lead (MC) isn't exactly winning any awards for being a nice guy right off the bat. He's a hardened mercenary, and his initial reaction to a merman claiming to be pregnant with his child is, well, less than welcoming. Some might find his behavior off-putting, even considering the outlandish situation. Personally, I felt like it was a little too much.
What Works Well
Despite the rocky start, the story finds its footing. The dynamic between the tough, cynical MC and the persistent, somewhat uncivilized merman is undeniably entertaining. The "pearl baby" concept is unique, and watching the MC slowly transform into a protective parent adds a heartwarming layer to the narrative. The comedy shines through in the merman's antics and the MC's begrudging acceptance of his new reality. I found myself enjoying the unique take on mpreg, where the seme is the one carrying the child. It's a refreshing change from the usual tropes.
Areas of Concern
My biggest issue lies with the latter half of the story and the extras. The romance seemed to take a backseat once the child arrived, and the ending felt rushed and incomplete. I was left wanting more explicit declarations of love and a more satisfying resolution to the main couple's relationship.

Final Verdict
"Raising A Mermaid" is a fun, albeit flawed, read. If you're looking for a lighthearted story with a unique premise, a persistent merman, and a reluctant dad MC, this might be worth your time. However, be prepared for a potentially frustrating ending and some questionable character decisions along the way. I'd give it a solid 3.5/5 stars.
