Description
The elders used to scold you if you blithely brought home something preowned by someone else, saying ‘You shouldn’t thoughtlessly bring in things from outside.’ They thought you might experience bizarre things if by chance that item had belonged to someone who had passed away. You might disregard this as superstition in this age where recycling is considered a virtue, but in truth, they were right. How do I know this is true? Because the item I have right now is one of those things.. And it’s not just to the degree of having a strange aura. It has something of a special ability.

My Thoughts on Poten
"Poten" is a web novel that surprised me. Diving in, I wasn't entirely sure what to expect from a story with such a short name and a somewhat vague summary. But what I found was a charming slice-of-life tale set against the vibrant backdrop of the Korean entertainment industry, and I was hooked.
First Impressions
My initial impression was that this was going to be another "rise to fame" story, and while that's partially true, "Poten" offers something more. The protagonist, Kang Minho, isn't your typical underdog. He's a semi-retired pro-gamer with a unique family ability: psychometry that allows him to gain the skills of previous owners of cherished items. This power, while a bit of a stretch for the showbiz world, adds a fun, supernatural twist to the familiar narrative.
What Works Well
What truly shines in "Poten" is the author's ability to create relatable and humorous situations. The everyday conversations and witty banter had me grinning from ear to ear. Minho's thought processes are incredibly human, often leading to ridiculous yet relatable scenarios. The novel also manages to realistically portray the challenges and complexities of the entertainment industry. I found myself appreciating the detailed world-building, which vividly paints a picture of modern Korea, from the bustling cityscapes to the serene countryside. The author's attention to detail really immerses you in the culture.
Areas of Concern
While I thoroughly enjoyed "Poten", I did notice that the protagonist's ability feels a little underdeveloped. It's not the traditional psychometry I'm used to, and the leap from inheriting skills to becoming a celebrity felt a bit convenient at times. Also, the story can feel a bit too easy for the MC, making him a bit of a Mary Sue character.

Final Verdict
Despite some minor flaws, "Poten" is a delightful read that I highly recommend, especially if you enjoy magical realism and slice-of-life stories with a Korean entertainment twist. The humor, relatable characters, and unique premise make it a worthwhile experience. I'd give it a solid 4 out of 5 stars.
