Description

People say that time dulls the pain, but it was clear that whatever he had buried deep within his heart hadn’t healed in the slightest. “…Whether you want it or not, we’re… going to be married now… so as fellow sufferers…” Before Hae-in could finish her trembling words, Joo-hyun tightened his grip on her chin, making it hard for her to breathe. “…You’ve made up your mind, haven’t you?” Joo-hyun spoke as he stared into Hae-in’s calm, sunken eyes. “In that case, let’s see how long you can last.” As his rough hand grabbed hold of her, Hae-in bit down on her lip.

My Thoughts on Possession
"Possession" is a wild ride, a story that grabs you from the start and doesn't let go, even when you wish it would. It's not a light and fluffy romance; it delves into some pretty dark themes and explores the complexities of love born from less-than-ideal circumstances. While it has its issues, I found myself ultimately captivated by the journey.
First Impressions
The beginning of this novel is rough. I mean, seriously rough. The male lead, Joo-hyun, starts off as… well, not exactly hero material. His actions are driven by revenge, and while I can understand his motivations, it doesn't excuse some of his behavior. It's the kind of start that makes you wonder if a happy ending is even possible, but I was intrigued enough to keep going.
What Works Well
Despite the initial darkness, I found myself really enjoying the female lead, Hae-in. She's not a pushover, and even when she seems naive, she possesses an inner strength that shines through. Watching her navigate the complex dynamics of her arranged marriage and the secrets surrounding her was compelling. The family drama, especially involving Joo-hyun's grandmother (prepare to loathe her!), adds another layer of intrigue. The story definitely kept me guessing. I also appreciated that it has a definitive happy ending, even if it takes a while to get there.
Areas of Concern
I definitely encountered some issues with the translation. It wasn't consistent, and at times, pronouns and names seemed to shift randomly, which caused confusion and took me out of the story. It didn't ruin my overall understanding, but it was a noticeable problem that detracted from the reading experience.

Overall, I'd give "Possession" a solid 3.5 out of 5 stars. It's a flawed but ultimately engaging story. The dark themes, complex characters, and family drama make it a compelling read, but the translation issues do hold it back. If you're looking for a romance that's a bit different from the norm and aren't afraid of some darkness, then this might be worth checking out. Just be prepared for a bumpy ride!
