My Thoughts on Perennial Species
"Perennial Species" is a novel that grabbed my attention with its unique blend of genres. I dove in expecting a typical action fantasy, but what I found was a complex world with intriguing characters and a plot that kept me guessing. While it has some minor drawbacks, the overall experience was definitely worthwhile.
First Impressions
From the start, I was impressed by the world-building. The concept of Mansaengjong battling mutants within a gate to another world immediately hooked me. I appreciated how the author gradually revealed information, immersing me in the story without overwhelming me with exposition. I also found the main character, Seowoon, to be relatable and enjoyable, even when he was struggling.
What Works Well
The relationship between Seowoon and Cahaya, the male lead, is a major highlight. Their chemistry is undeniable, and their interactions range from hilarious to heartwarming. I loved the slow-burn romance and the way their connection deepened as the story progressed. Cahaya's character is particularly well-developed, evolving from a seemingly cliché playboy into a complex and deeply devoted partner. The plot twists kept me on the edge of my seat, and I found myself constantly theorizing about what would happen next. The action scenes were also engaging, and I appreciated that they weren't overly long or drawn out.
Areas of Concern
While I enjoyed the novel overall, I do have a few minor criticisms. I felt that some of the side characters could have been more fleshed out. While I understood their roles in the story, I didn't always feel a strong connection to them. Also, I can see how some readers might find the initial misunderstandings between Seowoon and Cahaya a bit frustrating, though I personally found them endearing.
