My Thoughts on Not the Female Lead, But An Extra
"Not the Female Lead, But An Extra" promised a fun twist on the reincarnation trope, and for the most part, it delivered. The premise is simple: a woman transmigrates into a novel as a minor, insignificant character and tries to avoid her destined death. What follows is a comedic romp through a fantasy world, filled with magic, royalty, and a reverse harem vying for her attention.
First Impressions
I was immediately drawn in by the humor. The female lead's (FL) earnestness, bordering on cluelessness, is genuinely funny. She's not your typical cunning protagonist; instead, she's hardworking, a little dense, and constantly misunderstanding the intentions of the male leads (MLs). This creates some hilarious situations, especially in her interactions with the emperor.
What Works Well
The author excels at creating a lighthearted atmosphere. The dynamic between the FL and the MLs is entertaining, and I enjoyed the various "if" endings exploring different romantic paths. The story also does a good job of addressing the original novel's plot holes, revealing deeper secrets and motivations that were previously unexplored. The world-building, set in a European-inspired ambience, is also a plus, providing a rich backdrop for the comedic events. I also found the FL's personal growth satisfying. She starts as someone just trying to survive, but slowly develops into a capable individual who makes her own mark on the world.
Areas of Concern
However, the FL's naivete can sometimes be a bit much. While it's played for comedic effect, there were moments where I found her lack of common sense frustrating. Also, the emperor's initial treatment of the FL as a "drill sergeant" was a bit off-putting. While it eventually leads to romance, the power dynamic felt unbalanced at times.

Final Verdict
Overall, "Not the Female Lead, But An Extra" is a fun and engaging read, especially if you're looking for a lighthearted romance with a comedic twist. While the FL's denseness can be grating at times, the humor, interesting plot developments, and reverse harem antics make it a worthwhile journey. I'd recommend it to anyone who enjoys reincarnation stories with a focus on comedy and romance.
