My Thoughts on Myst, Might, Mayhem
"Myst, Might, Mayhem" promised a wild ride, and it definitely delivered...mostly. As a fan of the wuxia genre, I was intrigued by the premise of an anti-hero protagonist tearing through the murim world. Having finished the story, my feelings are a bit mixed, though overall I'd say it's a worthwhile read, especially if you're already familiar with the author's other works.
First Impressions
The initial chapters really grabbed me. The MC's ruthless nature and rapid growth were immediately engaging. I found myself hooked, eager to see how far he'd go. The story sets up a compelling world with hints of a larger universe, especially for those who have read "Nano Machine" and "Absolute Sword Sense." I was definitely excited to see how this story would unfold.
What Works Well
The action is a definite highlight. The fight scenes are frequent and, for the most part, keep you on the edge of your seat. The MC's "copycat" ability is reminiscent of Daniel from Lookism, making for some creative and dynamic combat. The story also does a decent job of wrapping up loose ends, giving closure to several side character arcs. I appreciated that the author didn't leave too many plot threads dangling.
Areas of Concern
While the beginning was strong, the story does stumble a bit in the middle. I agree that the pacing slows down considerably around the imperial arc. The constant repetition of side characters being amazed by the MC's progress also grew tiresome after a while. The final arc also felt rushed and, while ambitious in its scope, didn't quite stick the landing for me. I also found the spirit character to be a bit one-dimensional and repetitive, which detracted from my enjoyment.
Final Verdict
"Myst, Might, Mayhem" is a fun but flawed read. If you're looking for a standard murim story with a morally grey protagonist and plenty of action, this might be up your alley. However, be prepared for some pacing issues and a somewhat underwhelming ending. I'd recommend it with reservations, especially for fans of the author's previous works or those who enjoy the "evil" MC trope. Just be aware that there are arguably better stories out there with similar themes. I'd give it a solid 3.5 out of 5 stars.
