The initial hook is strong. Bari, born under a dark omen, is abandoned and forced to navigate a cruel world. The story plunges you into the underworld pretty quickly, introducing Mujang, a disgraced god seeking redemption. The setup is compelling: Bari needs holy water to save those she loves, and Mujang needs it to reclaim his honor and save his sister. The deal he's offered – father a child in exchange for the water – adds a layer of moral complexity that really grabbed my attention.
What Works Well
The world-building is where this novel truly shines, at least for me. The author has clearly drawn inspiration from Korean mythology, and it adds a unique flavor to the fantasy genre.
