My Thoughts on Monochrome Sovereign
"Monochrome Sovereign" is a wuxia novel I recently dove into, and it’s been quite the ride. While it hasn't become my absolute favorite, it definitely has some strong points that kept me reading.
First Impressions
Initially, the regression trope felt a bit stale. I've seen it done so many times, but I was willing to give it a shot based on the novel's solid overall rating. The world-building, with its Great Sects, Clans, and Demonic Factions, felt familiar yet intriguing, especially with the unique addition of the Yeon and Myeong Clans, and the three powerful Evil Cults.
What Works Well
The protagonist, Yeon Hojeong, is a major highlight. I appreciate that he isn’t instantly overpowered after regressing. His journey back to his former strength as the Dark Sovereign (Boundless realm) is a gradual climb, relying heavily on strategy, intelligence, and forming crucial alliances. The fights are described as a treat, especially since he wields chained battle axes, a refreshing change from the usual swords and spears. The clear explanation of the cultivation realms also made it easy to follow the power progression. I also found the political infighting within the Murim Alliance to be a compelling aspect of the story.
Areas of Concern
One recurring issue that bothered me throughout my reading experience was the translation. The inconsistency in names for characters, places, and organizations was distracting. Seeing the same family referred to as both the Tang and Dang family, with inconsistent spacing and translations, created confusion and momentarily pulled me out of the story.

Final Verdict
Overall, "Monochrome Sovereign" is a solid wuxia novel with a compelling protagonist, intricate world-building, and strategic battles. If you can overlook the translation inconsistencies, you'll likely find yourself enjoying the journey of Yeon Hojeong as he navigates the treacherous martial world and seeks to rewrite his past. I'd give it a solid 3.5 out of 5 stars.
