My Thoughts on Midnight Interview
"Midnight Interview" promised a mature, dramatic romance, and while it delivered on some fronts, it stumbled in ways that left me feeling conflicted. It's a story about a writer, Seo Jungyoon, and his relationship with Yoon Taerim, a hotel CEO. The premise is intriguing, but the execution has some significant flaws that I can't ignore.
First Impressions
Initially, I was drawn in by the dynamic between the two leads. The idea of a busy CEO adapting to the lifestyle of a dedicated writer was appealing. The early stages of their relationship felt genuine, with Taerim showing a willingness to understand and support Jungyoon's passion for his work. It had the potential to be a heartwarming story about finding love despite differing lifestyles.
What Works Well
The gradual development of feelings between Jungyoon and Taerim is well-paced in the beginning. I appreciated how Taerim made an effort to integrate himself into Jungyoon's life, respecting his need for solitude and creative space. The initial chemistry between the characters was also a strong point, making their connection believable and engaging. The author paints a convincing picture of two individuals from different worlds finding common ground.
Areas of Concern
Unfortunately, the narrative takes a dark turn that I found deeply problematic. The introduction of manipulative tactics and, most troublingly, a scene of r*pe, completely derailed my enjoyment. This event felt jarring and unnecessary, undermining the previously established character dynamics. Furthermore, the lack of proper acknowledgment and confrontation regarding this act within the story left me feeling uneasy. I also found the portrayal of the ex-boyfriend to be a bit cliché. Resorting to a cheating trope to remove him felt like a missed opportunity for more nuanced storytelling.

Final Verdict
"Midnight Interview" had the potential to be a compelling story, but the inclusion of harmful elements ultimately overshadows its strengths. While the initial romance and character dynamics were engaging, the later plot developments and handling of sensitive topics leave much to be desired. For me, it's a 3 out of 5 stars.
