My Thoughts on In This Life, I Will Be Your Dog
"In This Life, I Will Be Your Dog" certainly grabbed my attention with its intriguing premise and the promise of some steamy romance. It's a novel that boasts a blend of adult themes, fantasy elements, and a strong focus on character growth, all wrapped up in a European-esque setting. After diving in, I found myself with mixed feelings, appreciating certain aspects while also feeling a bit let down by others.
First Impressions
The opening is definitely a strong point. I appreciated how the author immediately throws you into the thick of things by showcasing the end of the protagonist's first life. This atypical beginning avoids the usual slow-burn exposition and instantly establishes the high stakes and complex relationships that drive the narrative. The tension between the main characters is palpable from the start, creating a captivating atmosphere that kept me hooked.
What Works Well
The initial dynamic between Bellona and Caelus is undeniably a highlight. Their interactions are fraught with tension and a delicious "enemies to lovers" vibe. Bellona, in particular, shines as a determined and clever protagonist who isn't afraid to give as good as she gets. I also appreciate the novel doesn't descend into a typical abuse narrative, and instead, shows Bellona standing her ground. The early smut scenes are well-written and add a layer of complexity to their relationship, exploring themes of desire and power dynamics.
Areas of Concern
As the story progresses, the plot seems to lose some of its momentum. The reveal that Caelus is also a regressor, while initially promising, introduces some frustrating plot contrivances. It felt like the author introduced this element to skip over certain regression story tropes, but it ultimately created new problems. The biggest issue for me was Bellona's apparent inability to figure out that Caelus also remembers their past life. It feels forced and unnecessary, especially considering her intelligence is otherwise emphasized. This plot point seemed like a cheap way to drag out drama, which was disappointing. Also, the initial spark of the R-19 content diminishes, becoming less about character development and more about generic descriptions.

Final Verdict
Overall, "In This Life, I Will Be Your Dog" is an enjoyable read with a strong start and compelling characters. However, the plot loses some of its luster as it progresses, hampered by contrived drama and a frustratingly oblivious protagonist. While the initial tension and well-written smut scenes are definite pluses, the later plot developments leave something to be desired. I'd recommend it with reservations, suggesting readers temper their expectations as they delve deeper into the story.
