This novel dives headfirst into some pretty heavy themes, and while the premise is familiar, the execution seems to be what sets it apart. Prepare yourself for a rollercoaster of emotions, because this isn't a story that shies away from the darker aspects of human relationships.
What Works Well
The strength of this story lies in its complex characters, particularly the female lead (FL). She's not your typical damsel in distress; she's a survivor, hardened by a truly horrific past. I found her "cold" behavior, especially towards her child, to be understandable, if not entirely sympathetic. The novel does a good job of showing us why she is the way she is, making her choices, even the questionable ones, feel grounded in her experiences. I especially liked that the child in the story acted like a real child and not like a mini adult. I also appreciated that the author was frank about sex. It's refreshing when characters in these novels act like real people.
The male lead (ML), while initially frustrating, also undergoes significant development. He starts off making hasty judgments and assumptions, but he eventually confronts his own shortcomings and strives to improve.
