Description
The school’s Madonna has filled the outer moat. At Raito’s school, a confession is made every few days to Misaki, who is said to be the most popular girl in school. It was inevitable that Misaki, with her cuteness that made everyone look back at her when they passed her in the street, and her kind and cheerful personality that made her popular with everyone, regardless of gender. However, the most important thing about Misaki is that she is not interested in love and has no intention of going out with anyone. Nevertheless, she was in trouble because she was getting confessions every few days. Raito was annoyed by this, but he drew a line between himself, the unlikable one, and Misaki, the popular one, who lived in a different world. A turning point occurs when the two, who normally would not have had a deep relationship, are forced to meet. Raito, who was originally just taking his little sister to the festival at her request, finds himself in a situation where Misaki is being bothered by unwelcome attention. To fend off troublesome men, Raito pretends to be Misaki’s boyfriend to navigate through the situation. However, the scene is witnessed by other students at school, and word spreads quickly. His younger sister is also convinced that Misaki is his girlfriend, and she asks him to be her boyfriend, so Raito becomes Misaki’s fake boyfriend.

My Thoughts on I Became the Boyfriend of the School’s Madonna, Who Had Turned Down Numerous Confessions, but Somehow, Without Realizing It, I Wasn’t Just Playing a Role Anymore
This title is a mouthful, but the premise is undeniably intriguing! A fake relationship with the school's untouchable Madonna? Sign me up! I dove into "I Became the Boyfriend…" with high hopes for some sweet romantic comedy and maybe a touch of drama. While it delivered on some of that promise, it also stumbled in a few areas, leaving me with mixed feelings.
First Impressions
The initial chapters hooked me immediately. The setup is classic but compelling: a seemingly ordinary guy getting tangled up with the most popular girl in school. The early moments of their fake relationship were genuinely entertaining, with the awkwardness and forced interactions providing plenty of laughs. I was eager to see how their dynamic would evolve.
What Works Well
The early romance is definitely a strong point. There are some undeniably sweet moments sprinkled throughout the story. The female lead is portrayed as beautiful, smart, and kind, which makes her easy to root for. The author does a decent job of portraying the "love interest falls in love first" trope, which is always a plus in my book. The concept of exploring the transition from a staged relationship to genuine feelings is interesting.
Areas of Concern
However, as the story progressed, I found myself agreeing with some of the criticisms I've seen. The "pretend" aspect of the relationship seems to fade into the background a bit too quickly. It feels like a missed opportunity to really explore the comedic and dramatic potential of maintaining a facade. The reasoning for continuing the charade in private also felt somewhat flimsy.
Additionally, the male protagonist's density can be frustrating at times. While a bit of obliviousness can be endearing, it sometimes feels overdone, leading to unnecessary misunderstandings. I also felt like some chapters were quite short, leaving conversations and scenes feeling a bit abrupt.

Final Verdict
Overall, "I Became the Boyfriend of the School’s Madonna…" is a pleasant, albeit somewhat flawed, read. It's a decent choice if you're looking for a lighthearted romance with a sweet female lead and an early romance focus. However, be prepared for a protagonist who can be a bit dense and a plot that doesn't always fully capitalize on its initial premise. I'd give it a solid 3/5 stars. It has potential, but it needs a bit more polish to truly shine.
