My Thoughts on Gourmet Live Room
"Gourmet Live Room" promised a delightful blend of sci-fi, cooking, and romance, and while it delivered on some fronts, my experience was a bit of a mixed bag.
First Impressions
Initially, I was drawn in by the premise. A protagonist transmigrating into a futuristic world and using his culinary skills to become a livestreaming sensation? Sign me up! The early chapters introducing the MC's relationship with his younger sister, Xiaonan, were genuinely touching and tugged at my heartstrings. I was eager to see how the story would unfold.
What Works Well
The food descriptions are definitely a highlight. The author paints a vivid picture of each dish, making my stomach rumble as I read. The world-building, while not always the main focus, does offer glimpses into a fascinating futuristic society where livestreaming and cooking have become intertwined. I also appreciated the overall lighthearted tone and the occasional unexpected plot twists that kept me engaged. There's a definite charm to the "slice of life" aspects of the story, especially when the MC is interacting with his audience and sharing his passion for food.
Areas of Concern
However, I did have some reservations. The pacing felt uneven at times, with large chunks dedicated to viewer comments that, while initially amusing, grew repetitive. The romance aspect, particularly the male lead, raised some red flags for me. The age gap and power dynamics felt uncomfortable, especially given the MC's age upon transmigrating. I also noticed a recurring theme of nationalism that, while not inherently bad, sometimes felt heavy-handed and detracted from the overall story.
