My Thoughts on Etranger
"Etranger" is a web novel that initially pulled me in with its intriguing blend of genres – action, adventure, fantasy, romance, sci-fi, and seinen. It promised a unique take on the isekai/cultivation themes, and I was eager to see how it all played out. Having read the story, here are my thoughts.
First Impressions
The beginning of "Etranger" is definitely its strongest point. I was immediately invested in the main characters' struggle for survival after being thrust into a strange new world. Their realistic reactions and clever planning made them feel like relatable and intelligent individuals. The dynamic between the two main characters, especially the potential for romantic tension, added another layer of interest.
What Works Well
The world-building, while not overly detailed, is innovative in its fusion of sci-fi, fantasy, and cultivation elements. Each faction offers a unique perspective – the scientifically minded villains, the medieval fantasy humans – which creates a diverse and engaging world. I also appreciated that the power levels felt relatively grounded, at least initially. The male lead is very reliable and calm, which is a great change of pace.
Areas of Concern
Unfortunately, "Etranger" seems to stumble as the story progresses. The narrative becomes increasingly convoluted, and the author's tendency to withhold information from the reader can be frustrating. Plot points and character motivations become unclear, leaving me wondering what was happening. The characters that I initially loved became distant and unrelatable, which lessened my enjoyment. The naming conventions are also confusing and inconsistent.

Final Verdict
"Etranger" has a lot of potential, and its initial chapters are genuinely captivating. However, the confusing plot, distant characters, and inconsistent writing ultimately detract from the overall experience. While the world-building and unique genre blend are commendable, the execution falls short. I'd give it a tentative recommendation for readers who enjoy complex world-building and don't mind a bit of confusion, but be prepared for a bumpy ride.
