My Thoughts on Dungeon Predator

"Dungeon Predator" is a web novel that initially caught my eye with its blend of action, adventure, and a dash of sci-fi fantasy. The premise of a protagonist gaining ESP after a truck accident and then leveraging it in a VRMMORPG sounded like a potentially interesting twist on familiar tropes. However, after diving into the available chapters and considering the general sentiment, I find myself with mixed feelings.

First Impressions

The early chapters do a decent job of setting up the protagonist's situation. He's a former pro-gamer burdened with family debt, making his entry into the new VR game feel somewhat urgent. The ESP ability, while potentially overpowered, offers a unique angle on the typical VRMMORPG experience. I was initially curious to see how the author would balance this power with the challenges of the game world.

What Works Well

Some readers have pointed out that the translation quality is commendable, which is always a plus. A well-translated story can significantly enhance the reading experience, even if the underlying plot has some issues. Also, some readers felt that the story has a better story line than LMS, as the game itself has more thought and the NPCs have a story and are part of the side characters and build up.

Areas of Concern

However, there are significant concerns that I can't ignore. A recurring criticism revolves around the protagonist's character. Many find him unlikable, even describing him as a "vindictive little brat" who exploits others and abuses NPCs. This behavior, coupled with his seemingly instant access to overpowered abilities and items, makes it difficult to connect with him or root for his success. Several readers made direct comparisons to "Legendary Moonlight Sculptor," noting that "Dungeon Predator" lacks the humor and charm that made the former so popular.

Another major issue is the perceived lack of challenge and tension. The protagonist's ESP ability allows him to breeze through content that should be difficult, leading to a predictable and unengaging narrative. The plot armor is strong with this one, and it seems to come at the expense of meaningful character development and world-building. The world building breaks extremely early on, and only gets worse. The characters are one-dimensional garbage so far (NPCs got more spotlight than his family).

Final Verdict

Ultimately, "Dungeon Predator" falls short of its potential. While the premise is intriguing, the execution suffers from an unlikable protagonist, a lack of meaningful challenges, and questionable world-building. While some may find it a passable time-waster, I struggle to recommend it when there are so many other VRMMORPG novels that offer a more engaging and rewarding reading experience. It's a 2 out of 5 for me.
