Description
‘Even if our marriage, which the emperor has decided, becomes my revenge on you. Shouldn’t you endure it, my lovely bride?’ * * * When her father’s strategy, which led to rebellion in the neighboring country to make his son-in-law king, had failed, Deatrice, who lost her fiance, ended up getting engaged with the emperor’s favorite knight to avoid the crisis that befell her family. As the duke’s daughter, marrying a knight was a shame. What’s even worse was that the person she had to marry, the emperor’s favorite knight, was Lucius Elliot. He was her former lover, who she had to break up with because of her father’s opposition six years ago. Lucius was a passionate and affectionate lover. However, he lost his title and his land and was pushed to the battlefield after he was proven to be an illegitimate child by Deatrice’s father’s trick. Six years later, the two of them faced each other with the situation reversed, bearing the bad memories of the past. Deatrice was becoming heartbroken by Lucius’ action, which she couldn’t tell whether it’s an act of revenge or regret…

My Thoughts on Don’t Hold on to the Broken Branch
"Don’t Hold on to the Broken Branch" promised me angst, and while it delivered, it also gave me a complex story about flawed characters navigating a second chance (or perhaps a second torment). This novel dives into the aftermath of a broken relationship fueled by societal pressures and personal ambitions, set against a lush, European-esque backdrop. It's definitely a story that makes you think about the choices we make and their lasting consequences.
First Impressions
Initially, I was drawn in by the premise: a fallen noblewoman and a man seeking revenge. The arranged marriage trope, combined with the enemies-to-lovers potential, had me hooked. I appreciated that the female lead, Deatrice, wasn't portrayed as a damsel in distress. She's intelligent and strategic, trying to navigate a difficult situation the best she can.
What Works Well
What I found most compelling was the realism injected into the romance. This isn't a fairytale; it's a story about two people grappling with past hurts and present realities. The novel doesn’t shy away from showing the characters' flaws. Deatrice's past decisions, though perhaps understandable given her circumstances, haunt her. The male lead, on the other hand, is driven by a desire for revenge, making him morally grey. This complexity is what makes the story so engaging. I really enjoyed the fact that both the ML and FL have their flaws and that their reactions are consistent with their personalities and circumstances. The angst that this novel gives me is satisfying enough as we see the internal struggle of the characters in staying rational and true to their hidden intentions whilst also slipping from it because of their emotions and past.
Areas of Concern
While I appreciated the complexity of the male lead, I can understand concerns about his character. His behavior can, at times, feel inconsistent, oscillating between vengeful and… well, not quite loving, but something akin to it. It definitely requires patience to see if he'll grow. I also think the 'smut' tag might be a bit misleading. While the story is definitely adult, it's more focused on the emotional and psychological aspects of the relationship than explicit scenes.

Final Verdict
Despite some reservations about the male lead's initial behavior, I found "Don’t Hold on to the Broken Branch" to be a compelling and thought-provoking read. The characters are flawed, the situation is complex, and the angst is real. If you're looking for a fairytale romance, this isn't it. But if you're looking for a story that explores the complexities of love, forgiveness, and second chances, I'd recommend giving this novel a try. I'm giving it a solid 4 out of 5 stars.
