"Do All Mothers in Childcare Novels have to Die?" – the title alone hooked me! The premise is fantastic, a kind of meta-commentary on the common trope of mothers dying in these stories. I dove in hoping for something clever and emotionally resonant, and I wasn't entirely disappointed.
First Impressions
Initially, the humor grabbed me. The female lead's quirky personality, especially her forgetfulness, is genuinely amusing. The dynamic with the male lead also started strong. He initially sees her as a cute, hamster-like creature, which creates a fun and lighthearted beginning. It’s a refreshing change from the typical cold and brooding MLs we often see.
What Works Well
The character development is definitely a highlight. Watching the FL grow from a seemingly helpless "hamster" into a politically astute woman who can protect herself is compelling. The romance, too, is well-paced. The communication between the leads is surprisingly mature and realistic, which is always a win in my book. I also appreciated how the story addresses the FL's past trauma. Her method of dealing with her abusive half-sister is dark, but it felt earned and added depth to her character.

While I would have loved to see more of the future OG FL, the novel delivers on its premise and offers a satisfying conclusion. I give it a solid 4/5 stars. It's a fun, engaging story that subverts expectations and delivers a genuinely compelling romance.
