Description
Seok Mun-pyeong, the 3rd Team Leader of the Soul-Slaying Unit—one of the most peripheral posts in the entire Demonic Cult—didn’t think much of it when the War of the Demonic Dragons, the contest to select the cult’s next successor, was suddenly canceled. Even the outlandish news that the Cult Leader, a figure revered as the sky above the sky, had accomplished Rejuvenation was just a distant rumor to him. He never imagined that this monumental event would become a fire dropped squarely on his own feet. “Naturally, I’m not asking you to perform the standard duties of a Majeong. As you well know, you are not suited for such work. The role I have for you is something different. I want you to be His shadow, and at the same time, His tail.” ‘No way… when he says ‘Him,’ does he mean the ‘Him’ I’m thinking of?’ Seok Mun-pyeong was thrown into confusion. It sounded like madness, but the official’s expression was dead serious. A chill began to creep down his spine. ‘So, a Demonic Shadow is ‘His’ shadow, and I’m supposed to be both the shadow and the tail? A ‘tail’ means to track and report on His movements… Is he really ordering me to spy on the supreme Cult Leader?!’ “…Me?”

My Thoughts on Celestial
After diving into "Celestial," I can definitely see why it has garnered a dedicated following. This novel is a blend of genres, offering a unique reading experience that surprised me. While the initial rating gave me pause, I'm glad I took the plunge.
First Impressions
The beginning was a bit jarring, I'll admit. The initial non-consensual encounter is definitely a trigger, and it's not glossed over. However, it does become a catalyst for exploring the male lead's complex backstory, which adds a layer of depth to his character. The synopsis might lead you to believe it's all spice and no substance, but I found the plot to be surprisingly intricate and engaging.
What Works Well
One of the strongest aspects of "Celestial" is the dynamic between the main characters. Munpyeong, the protagonist, is refreshingly average. He's not the strongest, smartest, or most handsome, and that's precisely what makes him relatable. His "I just want to survive" attitude and his interactions with the powerful Cheonma create a compelling and entertaining relationship. The romance is a slow burn, with Cheonma realizing he cares more, leading to some truly satisfying moments. The author's world-building is also impressive. The story is steeped in wuxia elements, despite being a Korean novel, and the author's research into the geography and historical events is evident.
Areas of Concern
While I enjoyed the overall story, there were a few things that bothered me. The hidden-identity arc felt a bit drawn out, and I found myself skimming through some parts. Also, the translation could be a bit inconsistent at times, with the ChatGPT sometimes using Chinese names instead of Korean ones.

Final Verdict
Despite its flaws, "Celestial" is a thoroughly enjoyable read. The engaging plot, the well-developed characters, and the satisfying romance make it a hidden gem. If you're looking for a wuxia-inspired story with a unique twist, I highly recommend giving "Celestial" a try. I'd rate it a solid 4 out of 5 stars.
