My Thoughts on Beloved Person
"Beloved Person" is a novel that throws you headfirst into a dark and morally ambiguous world, and while it's not without its flaws, it definitely kept me turning the pages. This story is a cocktail of mature themes, a mafia backdrop, and a romance that blossoms in the unlikeliest of circumstances. Be warned, though, this isn't a story for the faint of heart, with its exploration of power dynamics and characters who operate firmly outside the lines of conventional morality.
First Impressions
Initially, I was wary. The premise, with its debt-ridden MC and powerful, potentially abusive ML, raised some red flags. However, I was intrigued enough to dive in, and I found myself quickly drawn into the fraught relationship between Amin and In-beom. The story starts with Amin being used as collateral for his brother's debts, placing him in a very vulnerable position under In-beom's control.
What Works Well
The novel's strength lies in its raw portrayal of its characters and their evolving relationship. While predictable, the dynamic between the meek MC and the overbearing ML has an undeniable pull. I found myself invested in seeing how their connection would develop, even if it was within the confines of a somewhat cliché power imbalance. The pacing is also well-managed, keeping the story engaging without dragging out conflicts unnecessarily. The author doesn't shy away from the darker aspects of the narrative, creating a world that feels both dangerous and compelling.
Areas of Concern
The primary issue I had with the story is the lack of significant character development, especially for Amin. He remains largely passive throughout, and while some might find his submissiveness endearing, I found it a bit frustrating at times. The plot, while entertaining, also lacks complexity. It follows a fairly predictable trajectory, and the world-building could have been more fleshed out. If you are looking for mind-bending plot twists, this is not the story for you.
Final Verdict
"Beloved Person" is a guilty pleasure read. It's not groundbreaking, but it provides a captivating escape into a world of dark romance and questionable morality. If you're a fan of mafia BLs, possessive MLs, and don't mind a predictable plot with a submissive MC, you'll likely find this novel enjoyable. Just be prepared to turn off your brain and embrace the clichés. I'd give it a solid 3.5 out of 5 stars.
