My Thoughts on Became a Failed Experimental Subject
"Became a Failed Experimental Subject" throws you headfirst into a world of superhumans, monsters, and shadowy organizations, and honestly, I found myself pretty hooked. It's a blend of action, adventure, and a touch of the psychological that kept me turning the page (or scrolling, as it were).
First Impressions
Initially, I was drawn in by the unique premise: a protagonist who's a discarded experiment navigating a world that both fears and needs him. The early chapters do a great job of setting the stage, introducing the key players, and hinting at a larger, more complex world. The main character's somewhat simple desires – food and sleep – juxtaposed against the backdrop of a superhero-esque society, made for an interesting contrast.
What Works Well
One of the strongest aspects of this novel is the main character himself. He's not your typical righteous hero, nor is he a brooding anti-hero. He's somewhere in between, a bit naive due to his isolated upbringing, but with a strong moral compass and a willingness to protect those in need. I particularly enjoyed his interactions with other characters; his cat-like mannerisms and straightforward thinking often lead to humorous and heartwarming moments. The world-building is also surprisingly well-done. The author has clearly put thought into the societal structures, the power system, and the relationship between humans and monsters. I appreciated the cause-and-effect relationships, like the use of modular infrastructure to quickly repair cities after monster attacks, which made the world feel more believable. Some of the villains are well-written, too, with their own unique motivations and perspectives.
Areas of Concern
Despite my overall enjoyment, there were a few areas that gave me pause. The pacing can be a bit uneven at times, and I felt some arcs drag on longer than necessary. The power system, while interesting, could use more fleshing out. It sometimes felt a bit arbitrary, lacking clear rules and limitations. Also, I noticed some inconsistencies in the plot and translation, which could be distracting.

Final Verdict
Overall, "Became a Failed Experimental Subject" is an enjoyable read with a unique protagonist, interesting world-building, and engaging side characters. While there are some flaws, such as pacing issues and inconsistencies in the power system, the strengths of the novel outweigh the weaknesses. If you're looking for a superhero-esque story with a fresh perspective and a morally ambiguous protagonist, this might be right up your alley. I give it a solid 4 out of 5 stars.
