Archfiend Review & Spoilers - Novel Translator
My Thoughts on Archfiend
"Archfiend" is a web novel that tries its hand at blending modern-day life with cultivation elements. It's a unique premise, and while it has moments that shine, my overall experience was mixed. It definitely has a particular audience in mind, and I think it's important to go in with the right expectations.
First Impressions
Initially, I was drawn in by the dark and gritty atmosphere. The early chapters paint a picture of a world where cultivators and demons exist in the shadows, a sort of hidden war beneath the surface of everyday life. The MC, Xu Yangyi, starts off with a tragic backstory and a strong drive for revenge, which I found compelling. However, my initial enthusiasm waned as I progressed.
What Works Well
The world-building is a strong point. The author has clearly put thought into how cultivation practices and supernatural entities could realistically exist in a modern setting. I appreciated the integration of real-world Daoist concepts and Chinese mythology. The translator's notes are also helpful in understanding some of the more esoteric references. The story can also be gripping, managing to build tension well, specially during group fights.
Areas of Concern
My main issue lies with the pacing and the MC. The story can be slow, with long stretches of exposition and internal monologues. While world-building is good, at times it felt like I was reading an encyclopedia rather than a novel. Xu Yangyi, while driven, comes off as one-dimensional. He's stubborn to a fault and often relies on plot armor to get out of sticky situations. The writing style can also be a bit clunky, with awkward phrasing and convoluted descriptions. Also, the novel transitions from mostly urban to fantasy, which can be a turn off.

Final Verdict
"Archfiend" has potential, and its unique blend of modern and xianxia elements is intriguing. However, the slow pacing, one-dimensional characters, and occasional plot holes hold it back. If you're a fan of modern cultivation novels and are willing to overlook some flaws, you might find something to enjoy here. But if you're looking for a fast-paced, action-packed read with well-developed characters, this might not be for you. I'd give it a 3/5.
