Ama Review & Spoilers - Novel Translator
My Thoughts on Ama
"Ama" promised a dive into ancient China with a heavy dose of romance, and well, it certainly delivered on that promise. It's a completed original work, currently undergoing translation, so I decided to give it a shot. Here's what I thought.
First Impressions
The premise is… intense. We're talking about Lord Shen Si and his daughter, Yu Fei, and the story doesn't shy away from exploring a complicated and potentially controversial relationship. I went in knowing this was a central theme, so I was prepared for the direction the story would take. I was intrigued to see how the author would handle such a delicate subject.
What Works Well
For a relatively short novel, I found the plot surprisingly compelling. The pacing kept me engaged, and I appreciated that the author didn't rely on vulgar language to convey intimacy. The focus was more on the emotional connection (or lack thereof, depending on your perspective) between the characters. The doting nature of Lord Shen Si toward Yu Fei is a core element, and I could see how that dynamic could draw readers in. There's a certain allure to the power imbalance and the forbidden nature of their relationship that the author successfully captures.
Areas of Concern
The central theme of the novel is definitely a potential sticking point for many readers. The incestuous relationship between the father and daughter might be a turn-off, and I completely understand that. It's a significant aspect of the plot, so if that's something you're uncomfortable with, this probably isn't the book for you. I personally found it a bit difficult to reconcile the "doting" aspect with the ethical implications of the relationship.
Final Verdict
"Ama" is a novel that's going to evoke strong reactions, and it's not for everyone. If you're looking for a lighthearted romance, steer clear. However, if you're willing to explore a complex and morally ambiguous relationship within an ancient Chinese setting, "Ama" might be worth a read. Just be prepared for the potentially uncomfortable themes it explores. I would rate this novel 3 out of 5 stars.
