My Thoughts on A Spring Dream Under the Moon
"A Spring Dream Under the Moon" plunges you into a dark and complex historical romance, and I have to admit, it's been quite the ride so far. With its mature themes and morally gray characters, it's definitely not for the faint of heart, but it's proving to be a captivating read.
First Impressions
From the get-go, the story throws you into the deep end. Our female lead (FL) finds herself in a completely foreign world, forced into the imperial harem of a king who is, let's just say, less than ideal. The initial chapters are intense, and I immediately felt sympathy for the FL as she navigates this dangerous new reality. The setting, which refreshingly isn't European, adds a unique flavor to the story, and I found myself intrigued by the world-building.
What Works Well
One of the strongest aspects of this novel, in my opinion, is the FL herself. She's not some overpowered genius who instantly adapts; she's scared, confused, and makes mistakes, which makes her incredibly relatable. Her stubborn clinging to her modern values, even when it puts her at odds with the court, is a compelling aspect of her character. I'm also really invested in her desire to return to her own world and loved ones. The author does a fantastic job of portraying her internal struggles and making her feel like a real person caught in an impossible situation.
Areas of Concern
The male lead (ML), the king, is definitely a problematic character, and that's putting it mildly. His actions are often reprehensible, and while some readers might be drawn to his "tragic past" or potential for growth, I personally find it difficult to excuse his behavior. I do have to admit that the story is still ongoing and I am curious to see where the writer takes it.

Final Verdict
"A Spring Dream Under the Moon" is a dark and angsty novel with a compelling female lead and a morally ambiguous cast of characters. It's not a light read, but if you're looking for a historical romance with depth, complex themes, and a protagonist you can root for, this might be worth checking out. I'm giving it a tentative 3.5/5 stars, with the potential for that to change as the story progresses.
