"10 Rules of a Secretary" is quite the ride, a blend of tropes and heartfelt moments that kept me engaged despite some flaws. It's a story that definitely has its strengths, particularly in its characters, but also some areas where it could have been executed with more finesse.
First Impressions
Initially, I was drawn in by the premise: a boss-subordinate relationship with a charming, if somewhat dense, protagonist. The promise of a doting CEO and a slow-burn romance was definitely appealing, and the tags like "omegaverse" and "smut" added an extra layer of intrigue. I was ready for some classic romance with a side of steam, and for the most part, the novel delivered.
What Works Well
What really shines in this novel is the male lead. He's portrayed as incredibly devoted and supportive, almost to a fault. His patience and unwavering affection for the MC are genuinely heartwarming. I also appreciated the MC's spunky personality and his dedication to his job, even if his naivete could be frustrating at times. The smut scenes were also well-written and added a satisfying level of spice to the story. I found myself rooting for them, even when their communication was lacking.
Areas of Concern
However, the story does stumble in certain aspects. The MC's denseness regarding the ML's feelings often felt overdone, bordering on unbelievable. I also found the constant repetition of certain internal monologues a bit tiresome. The plot, while enjoyable, occasionally felt convoluted, and some of the plot devices required a significant suspension of disbelief. Also, the translation could be a bit inconsistent, with pronoun errors occasionally disrupting the flow of the narrative.
