Description
Marie, the youngest daughter of Earl Odillia, and Calix, the second son of the Marquis Escael, have been married for three years. Their union, a marriage of convenience, has always been strained—different family expectations, clashing mindsets, even incompatible habits. The only “couple-like” activity they share is having dinner together twice a week; they haven’t even held hands, let alone shared a wedding night. Then one day, Calix falls into a coma after a riding accident, and an unexpected event unfolds. When he wakes up three days later, he has completely lost all memory of their marriage and everything since! Seeing an opportunity, Marie, who once hoped for a divorce, tells him they were actually a loving couple. Calix, fully convinced, transforms into an affectionate, doting husband. The time when they slept separately becomes meaningless as he becomes obsessed with Marie, and although Marie is flustered by the situation her prank has caused, she gradually opens her heart as she gets to know Calix better. As a result, she refuses the suggestion from both families that they can now divorce and continues the marriage… But then, one day, Calix’s memory returns. (Excerpt) “Let go of me!” “I’ll let go if you promise not to leave me.” “I’m not leaving you…” “Please, don’t go.” “No, I’m just trying to leave the room…” “Please…” Who knew leaving the room would become such a desperate act?

My Thoughts on While I’m Asking Nicely
"While I'm Asking Nicely" promised a blend of adult romance, comedy, and a touch of fantasy, set against a backdrop of European aristocracy, and honestly, I was intrigued. Amnesia, a marriage of convenience, and a love interest who falls first? Count me in! But after diving in, I found myself experiencing a bit of a rollercoaster ride with this one.
First Impressions
The initial setup is definitely appealing. The amnesia trope is a classic for a reason, and the potential for misunderstandings and forced proximity always makes for some exciting reading. I was looking forward to seeing how the author would navigate the complexities of a pre-existing marriage turned on its head by a convenient bout of memory loss.
What Works Well
The European-inspired setting is quite charming, and the author does a decent job of painting a picture of aristocratic life. The male lead is a definite draw – handsome, seemingly devoted, and clearly harboring feelings for the female lead. The comedic elements are sprinkled throughout, providing some lighthearted moments amidst the heavier themes of marital discord and self-discovery. I enjoyed the 'slice of life' aspect; there are moments of everyday realism that help ground the story.
Areas of Concern
However, I did find myself struggling with the female lead's characterization. Her initial coldness and seeming indifference to her husband, even after his injury, made it difficult for me to fully root for her. It felt like her actions were driven more by external forces (her father's wishes, societal expectations) than by genuine internal conflict or growth. This made it harder to believe in the blossoming romance. It felt like she was simply going along with the situation rather than actively choosing to build a connection with her husband. This passivity, for me, was a significant stumbling block in fully enjoying the story.

Final Verdict
"While I'm Asking Nicely" has its moments of charm and promise, particularly in its setting and the male lead's character. However, the female lead's characterization and the questionable foundations of their "new" relationship held me back from completely falling in love with this story. It's not a bad read, but it's one that requires a bit of patience and a willingness to overlook some character inconsistencies. Ultimately, I'd give it a tentative recommendation, but with the caveat that the female lead's actions might not resonate with all readers.
