My Thoughts on To You Who Will Destroy Me
"To You Who Will Destroy Me" is a wild ride, to say the least. It's a novel that throws you into a dark and morally grey world with a compelling female lead just trying to survive. I went in expecting a typical villainous romance, but what I found was a story with surprising depth and character development, even if it occasionally stumbled along the way.
First Impressions
Initially, I was taken aback by the intensity of the male lead, Varkan. He’s definitely not your typical charming prince. He starts out as a truly terrifying figure, playing mind games and exhibiting sadistic tendencies. Irel, the female lead, finds herself in a precarious position, and her intelligence and resilience in the face of Varkan's… intense attention… is what kept me hooked. It's a far cry from a "fix-him" narrative, and that's a definite plus.
What Works Well
The biggest strength of this novel is the character development. Irel's growth from a somewhat fragile character to a more courageous and assertive woman is fantastic. And while Varkan starts as a major red flag, his character arc is fascinating. He doesn't magically become a saint, but he does evolve, showing a possessive, but genuine affection for Irel. I particularly enjoyed the communication between them. Misunderstandings, which often plague these types of stories, are surprisingly minimal. I also appreciated the system element, which felt integrated well into the plot and added a layer of realism to Irel's survival. By the end, I found myself invested in their relationship, despite its rocky beginnings. The plot itself, with its mix of political intrigue, adventure, and supernatural elements, kept me engaged.
Areas of Concern
The early chapters can be difficult to stomach due to the presence of non-consensual situations. It's crucial to be aware of these triggers before diving in. Also, the pacing in the later half of the novel felt a bit drawn out, particularly between chapters 160 and 240. Condensing these sections and adding more side stories could have improved the overall flow.

Final Verdict
Despite its darker elements and occasional pacing issues, "To You Who Will Destroy Me" is a surprisingly enjoyable read. The strong female lead, the complex character development of the male lead, and the engaging plot make it a worthwhile experience for those who enjoy dark fantasy romances with morally grey characters. Just be prepared for some potentially triggering content early on. I'd give it a solid 4 out of 5 stars.
