Description
“I think about it several times a day. How I could crush that haughty face of yours.” Janet Wilton, the culprit behind the cathedral arson case from eight years ago, has returned. Janet and her fiancé, Rihanel, must marry each other for their own purposes. But Rihanel hates Janet, the proud and rigid woman who shattered his daily life eight years ago, more than anyone else. “Whenever I want, I’ll inflict wounds on your body. Ten times. On that condition, I’ll marry you.” Rihanel can randomly see someone’s memories by touching their blood—a power passed down in the House of Reynes. He sets this condition to see with his own eyes what happened on that day eight years ago. A marriage precariously balanced on broken trust, like walking a tightrope. In the midst of this, Rihanel faces a truth completely different from what he had known……

My Thoughts on To You Who Despise Me
"To You Who Despise Me" promised a tantalizing blend of adult fantasy and romance, seasoned with a dash of European nobility. As a sucker for a good "marriage of convenience" trope, I dove in headfirst. The premise of a female protagonist returning to a life she left behind, only to be met with cold disdain, definitely piqued my interest.
First Impressions
The initial setup is intriguing: a woman, seemingly haunted by her past, forced into a marriage with a man who makes it abundantly clear he loathes her. He's inheriting something if he marries her, while she gets back her merchant company. The stage is set for angst, misunderstandings, and hopefully, some eventual character growth.
What Works Well
The story has a certain allure. The European-esque setting and noble backdrop create a rich atmosphere. The female lead, despite her circumstances, possesses a quiet strength that I found compelling. And the introduction of a second male lead, one who actually treats her with kindness, throws an interesting wrench into the works. I could definitely see the appeal of the manhwa adaptation, as the visuals would only enhance the story's aesthetic.
Areas of Concern
However, as the story progressed, I found myself increasingly frustrated. The male lead's behavior is...problematic, to put it mildly. His constant belittling and lack of communication create a toxic dynamic that's hard to stomach. I had a hard time understanding why the female lead would willingly subject herself to such treatment, especially given her past and the presence of a seemingly better alternative. The constant misunderstandings felt contrived and dragged on for far too long.

Final Verdict
Ultimately, "To You Who Despise Me" left me with mixed feelings. While the setting and initial premise held promise, the execution fell short. The toxic relationship between the leads and the frustrating lack of communication overshadowed any potential enjoyment. I went into this novel hoping for a tale of redemption and growth, but instead, I found a story riddled with unnecessary angst and questionable character choices. I give it a hesitant 3 out of 5 stars.
