My Thoughts on The Retired Supporting Character Wants To Live A Quiet Life
"The Retired Supporting Character Wants To Live A Quiet Life" presents an intriguing premise: a former hero's party member seeks a peaceful existence as an academy instructor. I dove in hoping for a unique take on the familiar academy setting, and while it has some bright spots, it also stumbles in key areas.
First Impressions
Initially, I was hooked by the summary. The idea of a competent, yet weary, protagonist navigating the politics and challenges of an elite academy had potential. However, the initial chapters felt a little shaky. I found myself, like others, questioning some of the world-building choices, particularly the academy's apparent incompetence despite its elite status.
What Works Well
The strongest aspect, for me, is the focus on the adult perspective. It's refreshing to see a story centered around the instructors and administrators rather than the students. The protagonist's past experiences with the hero's party – the kind hero, the yandere priestess, and the traumatized king – add layers to his character and provide interesting dynamics. I also appreciate the author's attempts to subvert typical tropes and create a unique narrative. The illustrations, scattered throughout the comments, are a nice bonus and genuinely enhance the experience.
Areas of Concern
Unfortunately, the novel suffers from some significant flaws. The world-building, while initially promising, seems to lose its way as the story progresses. I found myself questioning the logic behind certain character behaviors and the handling of political themes. The academy setting, despite being central to the plot, feels somewhat underdeveloped. My biggest concern, however, is the looming threat of a harem. While I'm not inherently opposed to romance, the hints of multiple love interests and the potential for it to overshadow the main plot are worrying.

Final Verdict
"The Retired Supporting Character Wants To Live A Quiet Life" is a mixed bag. While it offers a unique perspective and some compelling characters, it's held back by inconsistent world-building, potential harem elements, and underdeveloped aspects of the academy setting. It's a 3/5 for me. I'd recommend giving it a try if you're looking for something different, but be aware of its shortcomings.
