Description
The Duke has neither met the Princess nor married her, yet he refuses to call off the engagement. Frustrated, Servil travels to the distant north to confront her strange fiancé. But how can she manage to break off the engagement that he has neglected for the past 10 years? “My lord, what on earth are you thinking?” “I want to be entangled with you.” Servil narrowed one eye and blew a kiss into the air. …So she decided to give him a piece of her mind in the north. She had only 15 days to do so. *** “What I said back then was all a lie. It was just empty words to try and win you over.” “But didn’t you say I was handsome?” “That…is true, but…” “And didn’t you say I was cute?” “You’re quite the mimic.” “Yes, I learned from a very bad teacher.” Lucian locks eyes with her. Servil is enveloped by a foreboding feeling that all the bad things she had done would come back to her.

My Thoughts on The Princess Went to the North to Mess Things Up
First Impressions
Okay, so I went into The Princess Went to the North to Mess Things Up expecting a fun, lighthearted romp with a mischievous princess shaking things up in a stuffy northern kingdom. The European-esque setting and the promise of aristocratic drama definitely piqued my interest. The premise itself is quite intriguing: a princess in an arranged marriage, heading north to stir the pot? Sounds like a recipe for entertaining chaos!
What Works Well
The female lead is, without a doubt, the strongest aspect of this novel. She's beautiful, clever, and has a certain rebellious streak that makes her instantly likeable. The author does a decent job of building the world and establishing the societal norms that our princess is actively trying to subvert. I found myself enjoying the initial setup and the promise of her interactions with the northern court. The writing style is generally accessible, making it an easy read, and the pacing in the early chapters kept me engaged.
Areas of Concern
Unfortunately, my enthusiasm waned as the story progressed, primarily due to my issues with the male lead. His behavior is... perplexing, to say the least. The backstory of him making her wait and refusing to talk, even whilst acknowledging his feelings, is more frustrating than romantic. His internal struggles, while perhaps intended to be sympathetic, come across as weak and almost infuriating. I found myself questioning his motivations and overall character arc. This really hampered my enjoyment of the romance aspect, which is a pretty significant part of the story. The "annoy him" plan, while potentially amusing in concept, also felt a bit underwhelming in execution.
Final Verdict
The Princess Went to the North to Mess Things Up has a promising premise and a strong female lead, but ultimately falls short due to the frustrating characterization of the male lead. While the world-building and writing style are adequate, the issues with the romance and the male lead's actions made it difficult for me to fully invest in the story. I think this novel might appeal to readers who enjoy strong female protagonists and are willing to overlook the flaws in the male lead's character. However, for me, it was a bit of a letdown.
