My Thoughts on The Male Lead? I Don’t Want Him
"The Male Lead? I Don’t Want Him" is definitely a novel that evokes strong reactions. Diving into this story, I found myself experiencing a rollercoaster of emotions, mirroring the opinions of other readers. It's a blend of comedy, fantasy, and romance with a shoujo flair, set against a backdrop of European aristocracy. While it has its charms, it also presents some significant hurdles.
First Impressions
Initially, I was drawn in by the premise – a protagonist reincarnated into a novel, fully aware of its tropes and determined to avoid the predetermined romantic entanglements. The early chapters promised a clever subversion of typical isekai stories. I was ready for a sharp-witted female lead to dismantle the original plot!
What Works Well
The strength of this novel lies in its female lead, Luna. She's intelligent, relatable, and possesses a strong sense of self, which makes her journey quite engaging. Her interactions with the original male and female leads, especially when she "obliterates" them, are satisfying. The author's portrayal of Luna's reactions to the absurdity of the novel's world is also a highlight. The novel also seems to have a healthy dose of humor, and for some, that aspect is definitely a selling point. Additionally, there's a supportive father figure and a charming male lead (eventually!), which adds to the overall appeal.
Areas of Concern
However, the journey isn't without its bumps. One common criticism is the abruptness of the male lead's feelings. The development of trust and romance could have been more gradual and organic. Some readers found the side characters lacking depth, and their POVs didn't add much value to the overall narrative. Others felt the story became repetitive, especially concerning the female lead's friendship with Rosemary. I also saw concerns about the female lead's personality shifting later in the story, becoming more stereotypical and less sharp-witted.

Final Verdict
"The Male Lead? I Don’t Want Him" is a mixed bag. While the strong female lead and humorous moments offer enjoyment, the pacing issues, abrupt character development, and somewhat shallow side characters detract from the overall experience. If you enjoy a relatively low-stakes romance with a clever protagonist and don't mind a bit of repetition, this might be worth a read. However, if you prefer more nuanced character development and a more intricate plot, you might find yourself wanting more. Ultimately, I'd give it a cautious recommendation.
