Description
The Empire’s beauty – also known as the Devone Fairy, Herace Devone. During her family’s rebellion, she loses everything. Ezekiel, the illegitimate child of Duke Serpence, had a huge role in preventing treason in the Empire and hence was appointed as the Duke. “I want the extinct Devone family’s daughter, Herace.” So, the traitor, Herace becomes the Duchess. “Live. Just live. I will take care of everything else.” After Ezekiel’s numerous attempts, Herace gradually opens up. The two of them, who fell in love with each other, will have children. Three months had passed since Ezekiel had left for war, and when he returned, he had an unfamiliar woman next to him. “Greet her. She’s the woman who’ll be here in the future.” The woman’s swollen belly was no doubt at its limit.

My Thoughts on The Devil Who Breaks My Neck
"The Devil Who Breaks My Neck" is a web novel that certainly evokes strong reactions, and after diving in, I can understand why. This isn't your typical fluffy romance, and it's definitely not for the faint of heart. The tags alone – adult, tragedy, abusive characters – should give you a good idea of what you're getting into.
First Impressions
Initially, I was intrigued by the premise. I enjoy angsty stories, and the European aristocratic setting piqued my interest. However, almost immediately, the male lead, Ezekiel, set off alarm bells. It became clear early on that this wasn't going to be a story where I'd be rooting for the couple.
What Works Well
Despite the darkness, there's a compelling quality to the writing. The translation is well-done, and the author paints a vivid picture of the characters' emotional turmoil. I found myself engrossed in the female lead, Herace's, struggles, even as I was horrified by the circumstances she faced. The story pulls you in and doesn't let go, even when you desperately want to look away. I found the emotional impact of the story to be its strongest point, and the author did well in conveying the despair and anxiety that the characters went through.
Areas of Concern
The biggest issue, and one that many readers seem to share, is the male lead's actions. Ezekiel is, to put it mildly, a terrible person. His abusive behavior towards Herace is graphic and disturbing, and it can be difficult to stomach. While some might argue that it's a reflection of his character and the story's themes, it can also feel gratuitous and potentially triggering. Also, the ending may be unsatisfying for some.

Final Verdict
"The Devil Who Breaks My Neck" is a difficult novel to recommend. If you're looking for a lighthearted romance, steer clear. However, if you're drawn to dark, tragic stories with complex characters and are prepared for potentially triggering content, it might be worth a read. Just be warned: this is a story that will leave you feeling disturbed and emotionally drained. I'd give it a 3 out of 5 – the writing is strong, but the subject matter is not for everyone.
