"The Circumstances of Being Chosen as the Villainess’s Favorite" had me intrigued from the start, promising a blend of fantasy and romance with a strong female lead. While I enjoyed parts of the journey, some plot choices left me a bit disappointed.
First Impressions
The initial chapters hooked me. I was drawn into Lalit's story as she navigated her escape from a toxic engagement and a false friendship. The introduction of Evageline, the "cat-like ducal princess," immediately added a layer of charm and levity that I appreciated. It felt like a promising setup for a delightful reverse harem romance.
What Works Well
Lalit's character is definitely a highlight. I found her quiet confidence and competence refreshing, especially compared to some of the more "loud" female leads often found in this genre. Her interactions with the empress, displaying respect and sincerity, were particularly well-done. Dietrich, the male lead, is a total green flag – supportive, thoughtful, and powerful without overshadowing Lalit's abilities. I liked how their relationship felt mature and lacked unnecessary drama, a welcome change from the usual misunderstandings and "negging" tropes. The dynamic between Lalit, Evageline, and Dietrich created a charming trio that kept me invested in their individual and collective growth.
