Description
Because Ki Sihyeon is the only adult I don’t have to tiptoe around. I don’t have to be careful with him. He treats me like a kid—annoying, but he’s not afraid of me. He’s not weak. Seonwoo, a mental-type S-Class Esper raised under strict surveillance and control at the Center, was trained to suppress all emotion. Even when other Espers hurled insults or lashed out violently, he never once retaliated. He simply followed orders. But in front of Ki Sihyeon, a fellow S-Class Esper and his teammate—the only one who ever treated him like a person—keeping his emotions in check became a challenge. After all, he’d been in love with him for a long time. Yet Ki Sihyeon already had someone. A sweet, kind guide named Yoo Sejin. Because of that, Seonwoo never even considered confessing. Then one day, Sejin ends up in a vegetative state after trying to save Seonwoo. Wracked with guilt, Seonwoo braces for Sihyeon’s anger… But instead, Sihyeon says something cryptic. “Then you’ll have to take Sejin’s place, kid.”

My Thoughts on Sugar Cage
"Sugar Cage" is a web novel that definitely grabbed my attention with its dark twist on the guideverse trope. I went in expecting a certain kind of power dynamic, and while it delivered on some fronts, it also surprised me in unexpected ways. The story isn't afraid to explore the darker side of esper control and manipulation, which makes for a compelling, if sometimes uncomfortable, read.
First Impressions
The premise is what initially hooked me. A protagonist heavily controlled by the Esper Management Bureau? Sign me up! I've read stories where espers are mistreated, but this one seems to take it to a whole new level, especially with the protagonist being the one on the receiving end. The initial chapters drew me in with the intrigue and the constant question of who to trust.
What Works Well
One of the strongest aspects of "Sugar Cage" is its characterization. The characters feel realistic, and the lens through which the main character perceives the world is fascinating. The story excels at creating tension and uncertainty. Even now, I'm not entirely sure about the motivations of some characters, which keeps me guessing. This ambiguity is a testament to the author's skill in crafting complex relationships.
Areas of Concern
I do have some reservations about the pacing and the introduction of new plot elements. At times, it feels like too much information is being dumped at once, making it hard to keep track of everything.

Final Verdict
Overall, "Sugar Cage" is a novel with a lot of potential. Its exploration of a dark guideverse is unique and compelling, and the characterization is well done. However, the pacing issues and some plot developments hold it back from being a truly exceptional read. Despite these flaws, I'm still invested in the story and eager to see where it goes. I'd recommend it to readers who enjoy dark fantasy, complex characters, and aren't afraid of morally grey areas. Just be prepared for some twists and turns along the way!
