My Thoughts on Stolen
"Stolen" caught my eye with its promise of historical romance and a dash of intrigue. I dove in hoping for a compelling story, and while it wasn't perfect, I found myself surprisingly captivated.
First Impressions
The premise is definitely intriguing: a princess, Yi-ryung, forced into marriage with a butcher, Dochi, to save her family's honor. The initial setup immediately establishes a power imbalance and a sense of desperation, which I found quite compelling. The contrast between Yi-ryung's royal upbringing and Dochi's ostracized existence outside the city walls creates an immediate tension that kept me reading.
What Works Well
The core of the story, the evolving relationship between Yi-ryung and Dochi, is undoubtedly the strongest aspect. Dochi's unexpected kindness and care towards Yi-ryung, despite her initial fear and his "savage looks," is genuinely heartwarming. I appreciated the slow burn of their romance, as Yi-ryung gradually lets go of her prejudices and falls for Dochi's sincerity. The author does a good job of portraying their individual loneliness and how they find solace and comfort in each other. The political intrigue woven into the narrative also added another layer of depth, keeping me guessing about the true motives behind Yi-ryung's fate. The story is relatively short, which I appreciated, and it maintains a good pace throughout.
Areas of Concern
While I enjoyed the romance, I did find the power imbalance between Yi-ryung and Dochi a bit uncomfortable at times. The story skirts the line of certain potentially problematic themes, and while it ultimately aims for a sweet love story, some readers might find aspects of their relationship unsettling. I also felt that the ending, while happy, could have been explored in more depth. A little more resolution regarding the political plot would have been satisfying.

Final Verdict
Overall, "Stolen" is a surprisingly enjoyable read. It's a short, sweet, and somewhat angsty historical romance with a compelling premise and a heartwarming central relationship. While it's not without its flaws, the strengths of the story outweigh the weaknesses, making it a worthwhile read for those looking for a quick and engaging escape. I'd recommend it with the caveat to be aware of the sensitive content warnings.
