My Thoughts on Separation Anxiety
"Separation Anxiety" is a novel I approached with a mixed bag of expectations, given its mature themes and somewhat controversial tags. I dove in prepared for a potentially dark and twisted ride, and while it delivered on some fronts, it also left me wanting in others.
First Impressions
The initial chapters set the stage well, introducing the complex family dynamics and the growing bond between the main characters, Dawoon and Hayun. From the start, Hayun's protectiveness over Dawoon felt like it was crossing a line, hinting at the possessive nature that would later define their relationship. I was immediately drawn in by the slow-burn tension and the subtle hints of obsession.
What Works Well
The exploration of psychological manipulation is where this novel shines. Hayun's actions, while disturbing, are portrayed in a way that highlights the insidious nature of grooming and control. The novel delves into the internal struggles of Dawoon, illustrating how years of subtle manipulation can warp one's perception of reality. I found myself captivated by the intricate web of emotions and the way the story portrayed Dawoon's dependency on Hayun, even when he recognized the toxicity of their relationship. The translation was also well done, which made it easier to follow the story.
Areas of Concern
One of my main concerns is the pacing, which felt uneven at times. The intensity would ebb and flow, and there were moments when the plot seemed to drag. Additionally, while the novel flirts with darker themes, it never fully commits, leaving me with a sense of unfulfilled potential. I also felt that some of the side characters, particularly the grandfather, could have been developed further to add more depth to the overall narrative.

Final Verdict
"Separation Anxiety" is a novel that offers a glimpse into the complexities of obsession, control, and psychological manipulation. While it may not be a perfect story, it has its moments of brilliance, particularly in its exploration of the characters' inner turmoil. If you're a reader who enjoys morally grey characters and stories that delve into the darker aspects of human relationships, this novel might be worth a read. Just be prepared for a potentially triggering experience and a story that doesn't always deliver on its initial promise.
