Description
Cha Gweonwoo, an S-class esper who treats Kim Dowon, his dedicated guide, like an IV drip walking around the institute without ever exchanging a word with him. Their peaceful daily life is interrupted by Gweonwoo’s rampage and memory loss. Faced with a situation where they have to stabilize the lost memories and abilities due to the rampage’s aftermath within a month through guiding, Dowon is at a loss, and Gweonwoo is left with memories only up until he was twenty. Where is the fate of these two headed? “Were we really nothing to each other?” Huh? Blinking my eyes, Cha Gweonwoo hummed, his voice low, and looked at me with a deeply troubled face, resting his chin. “Then why are you so distant with me?” “……” “Did I annoy you by following you around?” “……” “If not that, then could it be… we dated and broke up?” This is driving me crazy. Gweonwoo, what on earth are you talking about? I was at a loss for words at his attitude, 100% certain, no, 1000% certain that he liked me before losing his memory. Asking if he followed me around because he liked me! Asking if we dated and broke up! He’s seriously misunderstanding something right now. Our genre obviously wasn’t that from the start! No, don’t people usually not think the genre would be that way?! Why is his mind jumping there?! Before he could go further down the wrong path, I hurried to correct the signpost. “That’s not it, Mr. Cha Gweonwoo disliked me.” Mr. Cha Gweonwoo, that’s not the right direction. Come this way. I even gestured, telling him it’s not that way and to come here, but Cha Gweonwoo asked as if wronged, like a soccer player who scored an own goal and is asking why it’s an own goal. “Me? Why?” …No, why are you asking me that?

My Thoughts on Sencha Replica
"Sencha Replica" promised a blend of fantasy, romance, and a healthy dose of mature themes, and while it delivered on some fronts, my experience was a bit of a rollercoaster. The guideverse setting intrigued me, and I dove in hoping for a unique take on the genre.
First Impressions
Initially, I was hooked by the premise of an amnesiac male lead (ML) and the caring protagonist (MC) tasked with guiding him. The dynamic between them seemed promising, with the potential for a slow-burn romance and plenty of emotional exploration. I appreciated the hints of a deeper connection between the two, even before the ML's memory loss.
What Works Well
The MC is undoubtedly a highlight. He's refreshingly relatable, just trying to navigate life, earn a living, and maybe enjoy a good meal. His internal monologues and quirky personality made him a joy to read. I also found the later development of both characters compelling. The story really shines when it delves into their individual traumas and how they learn to support each other. The side stories, especially those from the ML's perspective, added a layer of depth and emotional resonance that I appreciated. I also enjoyed how the author explored the cost of using esper abilities, adding a layer of complexity to the world-building.
Areas of Concern
However, I can't ignore some significant issues that arose, particularly in the earlier chapters. The ML's initial behavior, especially his possessiveness and disregard for the MC's boundaries, was troubling. There are moments that feel uncomfortably close to coercion, and the power imbalance between the two characters is hard to ignore. While the ML's amnesia provides some context, it doesn't excuse his actions entirely. This aspect of the story may be a trigger for some readers, and it's important to approach it with caution.

Final Verdict
"Sencha Replica" is a complex and at times challenging read. While I appreciated the character development and the exploration of trauma, the problematic elements in the first third of the novel are hard to overlook. If you're willing to navigate those issues and are drawn to the guideverse genre with a touch of darkness, you might find something to enjoy here. However, it's essential to proceed with caution and be aware of the potential triggers. Overall, I'd give it a cautious 3/5 stars.
