Description
Running out of money, the thief Tae Woowon infiltrates the home of chaebol heir Lee Yesin, posing as a bodyguard, with the intention of stealing a valuable necklace. My Thoughts on Precious Thing
"Precious Thing" is a novel that certainly left me with a lot to unpack. Going in, I knew I was diving into a darker world, and it definitely delivered on that front. While some aspects intrigued me, I ultimately found myself struggling with certain narrative choices.
First Impressions
From the outset, the story pulls you in with its mature themes and hints of mystery. The relationship between the main characters, fraught with tension and complicated by their individual traumas, immediately sets a dramatic stage. I was initially drawn in by the potential for character development and the promise of a complex plot.
What Works Well
I appreciated the author's willingness to explore difficult subject matter. The raw portrayal of trauma and its impact on the characters felt, at times, very real. The initial development of Taewoo was interesting, especially his interactions with Lee Yeesin. There were moments where I genuinely felt invested in their journey and hoped for a path toward healing.
Areas of Concern
Unfortunately, the story faltered in its execution for me. I struggled with the coherence of the plot, often feeling lost as to where the narrative was heading. The character motivations, particularly those of Lee Yeesin, sometimes felt inconsistent and driven more by plot convenience than genuine character development. The handling of sensitive topics also raised concerns, and at times, it felt like the story leaned too heavily into triggering content without sufficient exploration of the underlying issues. The lack of communication between the characters was also a recurring frustration.

Final Verdict
"Precious Thing" is a novel that attempts to tackle complex and challenging themes, but ultimately falls short in its execution. While it offers moments of intrigue and raw emotion, the inconsistent plot, problematic character motivations, and questionable handling of sensitive topics left me feeling disappointed. If you're considering reading this, be prepared for a dark and potentially triggering experience, and proceed with caution.
