My Thoughts on Picked Up In Winter
"Picked Up In Winter" is a story that definitely left me with a lot to think about. It's a psychological romance with yaoi elements, and the autism tag definitely plays a significant role. It's a short read, and I finished it relatively quickly, but the emotional impact lingered.
First Impressions
Initially, I was intrigued by the premise – a runaway finds himself "picked up" by someone who wants him as a pet. It's definitely an unusual setup, and I was curious to see how the author would handle the complex themes of family, mental health, and relationships. The early chapters moved at a good pace, and I appreciated the translation quality.
What Works Well
The novel shines in its exploration of internal struggles. Both the main characters have a lot going on beneath the surface, and their interactions are what drive the story forward. I found the family dynamic of the ML to be particularly compelling. Despite being imperfect, their love for each other was heartwarming, and the author did a great job of making the side characters feel alive. The slow-burn romance was well-executed, and the author skillfully built tension throughout the story. I also appreciated the novel's willingness to tackle difficult subjects like mental health and societal pressures.
Areas of Concern
While I enjoyed many aspects of the story, I also had some reservations. The MC can be frustrating at times, and his decisions often left me shaking my head. His tendency to run away from his problems, especially given his mother's sacrifices, was hard to sympathize with. It's a story that doesn't shy away from melancholy, and at times, it can be a bit depressing. The ending, while a happy one, felt somewhat rushed. I would have liked to see more closure for some of the side characters.

Final Verdict
Overall, I'd give "Picked Up In Winter" a solid 4 out of 5 stars. It's a beautifully written, albeit somber, coming-of-age story that explores complex themes of family, love, and mental health. While the MC's actions can be frustrating, the author does a good job of portraying his internal struggles and growth. If you're looking for a quick, emotional read with a unique premise, this novel is definitely worth checking out. Just be prepared for a bit of angst along the way.
