My Thoughts on Non Zero Sum
"Non Zero Sum" is... an experience. Going into this novel, I knew it was going to be dark, but I wasn't quite prepared for the depths it would plumb. This isn't a light read by any stretch of the imagination, and it's definitely not for the faint of heart.
First Impressions
The initial setup is deceptively simple: a protagonist, Haewon, struggling with financial difficulties and harboring a crush on his wealthy best friend. However, this quickly unravels into a tangled web of manipulation, abuse, and betrayal. Right from the start, I felt a sense of unease, a feeling that things were not as they seemed.
What Works Well
Despite the heavy subject matter, I can appreciate the author's ability to create a truly disturbing and thought-provoking narrative. The novel excels at depicting the complexities of trauma and the ways in which individuals can become trapped in abusive relationships. The characters, while deeply flawed, are undeniably compelling. The exploration of how a toxic relationship can develop, and the potential for Stockholm syndrome to influence decision-making, is particularly well-executed. The author masterfully crafts an atmosphere of psychological horror.
Areas of Concern
Honestly, the sheer darkness of the story can be overwhelming. The constant barrage of cruelty and abuse can be difficult to stomach, and I can see why some readers might find the ending unsatisfying. The relationship between the main characters is fraught with issues, and the lack of easily redeemable qualities in some characters can make it hard to root for anyone. I think the ending may leave readers wanting more resolution.

Final Verdict
"Non Zero Sum" is a challenging and disturbing read that will stay with you long after you finish it. While the heavy themes and potentially disappointing ending may not appeal to everyone, the novel's exploration of trauma, abuse, and the complexities of human relationships is undeniably impactful. I'd recommend this only to readers who are prepared for a dark and unsettling experience. Proceed with caution.
